  *Please note* as usual, for our last event of the year, if anyone would like to read favourite published poems on the open mic, instead of their own, it would be welcomed.


Kate North writes poetry and fiction.  Her poetry collection is called Bistro.  Her novel, Eva Shell, was published in 2008.  She has an MA in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia and a PhD in Creative and Critical writing from Cardiff University.  She teaches at Cardiff Metropolitan University and lives in Cardiff.

Daniel Sluman is a 25 year old poet based in Gloucestershire. His poems have appeared widely in journals such as Cadaverine, Popshot, Shit Creek Review, & Orbis. He is on the editorial board for Iota. His debut full-length collection, Absence has a Weight of its Own, is out now, and published by Nine Arches Press.'

Katy Evans-Bush has two full collections, Me and the Dead and Egg Printing Explained (Salt) and a pamphlet Oscar & Henry (Rack Press). Her literary blog, Baroque in Hackney http://baroqueinhackney.com, was shortlisted for the 2012 George Orwell Prize for political writing, and she will be blogger-in-residence at this year's Aldeburgh Poetry Festival in November. She teaches at the Poetry School in London and independently, and is a freelance writer. Katy has three children at university, and two guinea pigs called Frank O'Hara and Chet Baker.

Michael W Thomas

Michael Wyndham Thomas is an Irish-British writer.  He lived in Canada for a number of years, and he has been published extensively--and given numerous readings--in the UK, North America and Europe. He is now based in Worcestershire.

He is an internationally-known poet, fiction-writer, dramatist and musician.  His poetry, prose and scripts have appeared in Aereings, English, The English Review, Fire, The Interpreter's House, Iron, The London Magazine, Other Poetry, Pennine Platform, Stand, Staple and The Swansea Review (UK), as well as Poetry Salzburg Review and The National Gazette (Tirana), Alive!, From the Horse's Mouth, Grain and Reflections (Canada), Etchings (Australia),The Black Mountain Review and Irish University Review (Ireland) and The Antioch Review, Magazine Six, Modern Haiku, Muscadine Lines and The Secret of Salt (USA).  He also reviews for Other Poetry (Durham, UK), Poetry Nottingham (UK), Under The Radar (Rugby, UK) and The Journal of American Haiku (Toronto).

 

Michael's first poetry collection, God's Machynlleth and Other Poems, is available from Flarestack.  His latest collection, Port Winston Mulberry, is published by Littlejohn and Bray in 2010; while his CD, Seventeen Poems (and a Bit of a Song) is now on release from MayB Studios.  His novel, The Mercury Annual, was published in 2009 by Silver Age.  His novel, Pilgrims at the White Horizon, is appearing in 2012, as is his poetry collection The Girl from Midfoxfields.

His play, FAQ, was performed at the Worcester Festival, 2009, and also the Progress Theatre Drama Festival, Reading, 2009; his play, When?, was staged as part of the West Midlands Script project in Spring 2010.  He was shortlisted for the 2009 Wasafiri Fiction Prize, and, in the 2010 Bridport Prize, he was nominated  in both the poetry and fiction sections.  

Since April, 2004, Michael has been poet-in-residence at the annual Robert Frost Poetry Festival, Key West, Florida.  In consequence, he is now Poet-at-Large in the Navy of the Conch Republic of Key West.  He undertakes these bardic duties with due solemnity and happy bafflement.   Other recent events outside the UK include a reading at Linnaeus University, Sweden, in March 2010, and at Tampere University, Finland, in May 2011.  His latest publications have been in literary journals in Albania—not that this threatens Norman Wisdom’s pre-eminence in that country.

Miki Byrne

 Miki has  BA Hons. Degree in Three Dimensional design and a Post Graduate degree in Education. She  is the author of poetry collections ‘Nice-bits & Hissy-fits’ and ‘Mackerel Sky’. Miki has had work included in over 120 poetry magazines and anthologies. She has won prizes for her poetry and has read on both Radio and TV and judged poetry competitions. She has had ten short stories published to date and contributes articles to magazines. She draws inspiration from past careers which include teaching, being a Jeweller, a music business manager and a percussionist. She also lived on a narrow-boat for many years. Nick Alexander

Nick is an amateur poet living in Ledbury. He has published three physical volumes of poetry; I’ve Already Spent It (2004); For Reasons of Space (2006); and Excavations of Eternity (2009), the latter being a collaboration with Ledbury artist Jeanette McCulloch, firstly as an exhibition and then as a limited edition, fully illustrated, book.He has twice had programme events in the Ledbury Poetry Festival, most recently in 2011 with The Talking Wall, a reading to accompany a series of poster poems he developed with Ledbury printer Martin Clark. He also writes songs and perform in a local band, Echo Road, and has recently branched into prose. He has published his most recent collection of poetry online through Kindle – The Talking Wall (2011) - and have added an online sampler called Almost Free (2011), which includes poetry, song lyrics and short stories, most of which have not been published elsewhere.

Nick now wishes to explore possibilities for performance, and is always looking for opportunities to collaborate.

Guest Poets - Peter Wyton and Emma Purshouse

*N.B. if you are coming to the workshop: it will be performance based, so please bring a poem (of your own) that takes no more than 1 minute to read - or be ready to write one!

“Emma Purshouse has a sharp eye for the overlooked but poignant detail, her poetry is engaging and engaged.”

Emma Purshouse is a writer and performance poet.  She has won many poetry slams and performs at spoken word nights across the UK .  Her appearances include  The Cheltenham Literature Festival, Ledbury Poetry Festival and Solfest.  She has undertaken residencies for Wolverhampton Libraries and The New Vic Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent .

Her one-woman poetry play, ‘The Professor Vyle Show’, is a fast moving theatre piece that includes puppets, poetry and quick changes.  The show has been entertaining audiences in senior schools, colleges and small theatres since 2007.   

Emma has been published in small press magazines and poetry anthologies.  A CD of her work, entitled ‘Upsetting the Applecart’, was released by Offa’s Press in 2010 (www.offaspress.co.uk).

She also MCs a regular spoken word night in the West Midlands and organises and promotes successful cabaret nights.

Peter Wyton is well known to Buzzwords regulars; he is a 'poet of page and performance' who has published a number of books and who has appeared on BBC Radio. 

He is a widely published and prize-winning poet who has appeared at venues as diverse as Cheltenham Literature Festival, Glastonbury Festival, Ledbury Poetry Festival, Oxford TV, Lewes Prison and arts centres and theatres throughout the United Kingdom.

His work has appeared on BBC Radio 4's Poetry Please and Something Understood. He also reached the final of Radio 4's first Poetry Slam
